Jean Pennycook

Jean Pennycook After 20 years as a high school science teacher, Jean began her second career working with Adelie penguins in Antarctica. The team is funded by the National Science Foundation and since 2004, Jean has spent the Antarctic summers (Oct - Jan) living in a tent near the breeding colony at Cape Royds on Ross Island. Their research monitors the penguin population and how these iconic birds are responding to changes in their environment.

Jean has written a children's book about Adelie penguins and manages an interpretive website to connect the penguin research to classrooms and the public around the world. Here Jean provides a virtual field trip to the breeding colony and includes live interactions with the penguins. She earned her B.Sc. in Wildlife Biology from the University of California, Davis, her M.Sc. from California State University, Fresno, and lives in Los Osos, California.
