338 How To Look At Shorebirds And Why Fewer Is Better
Join Jon Dunn and Lara Tseng for a presentation on Shorebirds. Shorebirds are one of the more challenging groups of birds to learn and master. Before getting serious about this difficult group, consider an approach which brings you to a place with fewer birds than say a large lagoon packed with shorebirds, but where you can approach them closely. Take the time to learn the birds in front of you, concentrating not only on their appearance but on other aspects such as behavior. We'll focus on a handful of the smaller species within the genus, the Calidris, the notoriously difficult "peeps." If you can master these species, most of the other species within the shorebird families will be more easily learned. In addition to learning their plumages and behavior, knowing their distribution patterns in advance will prepare you for the "where and when," or paraphrasing what Pasteur famously said in 1854, "chance favors the prepared mind." Meets at the Vet's Hall, 209 Surf St, Morro Bay.
